Mr. Andrew Lee “Andy” Lawson, 88, of Hendersonville, N.C., went to be with Jesus on Monday, June 5, 2023 at Life Care Center of Hendersonville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Goodnough Lawson, whom he married in 1959.

A native of Hot Springs, N.C., Andy graduated from Biltmore High School in 1953 and Asheville Biltmore College (now UNC Asheville) in 1955. He worked as a claims adjuster for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. from 1965 until his retirement in 1995.

Church was an important part of his life, as evidenced by his longtime active membership at ​​First Baptist Church of Hendersonville. Among other roles at the church, he served as a deacon, a member of the pastor selection committee and a volunteer at Crosswalk Student Center. From the 1970s to the 1990s, he was active in lay renewals, participating in revivals in Australia, Hawaii and other places. In 2002, while living in Murrells Inlet, S.C., he was named Baptist Man of the Year at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach.

In his retirement years, Andy was active in the life of his beloved grandson, Cameron McGuire, who always affectionately called him Poppy. He took care of Cameron while his parents were at work, volunteered at his schools and attended all his sporting events. When Cameron was in eighth grade, his school named Andy “No. 1 Fan” for his boisterous support of the athletic teams.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his daughter, Tracy Lawson McGuire, and son-in-law, Justin McGuire, of Hendersonville; his grandson, Cameron McGuire, a student at Elon University; and his brother-in-law, Bill Dotson of Jefferson, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Pauline Lawson; a sister, Deanie Lawson Dotson; and a brother, Jim Lawson.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2023 at ​​First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, 312 5th Ave W., with the Rev. Steve Scoggins presiding. The family will greet guests in the church vestibule after the service.
