Hazel Mae Barnes Shelton, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on February 11, 2024, in Henderson County, North Carolina. She was born on March 10, 1925, in Yancey County, North Carolina to the late Walter and Bertha Barnes. At the time of her passing, Hazel Mae was 98 years old.
Throughout her vibrant life, Hazel Mae found joy in various hobbies and creative pursuits. She had a talent for painting and enjoyed it. Hazel Mae was also skilled in the art of quilt making and crocheting, crafting intricate and meaningful pieces that became cherished heirlooms. Her green thumb led her to spend countless hours tending to her beloved flowers, finding solace and contentment in their delicate blooms.
Hazel Mae will be remembered as a devoted wife and is now reunited with her late husband, Richard A. Shelton, in eternal peace. She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Myrtle Fender, Mafra Chandler, Ruby Lawing, and Ruth English, as well as her two brothers, Carroll Barnes and Ralph Barnes.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved son, Edward Shelton of Hendersonville, North Carolina, grandson Josh Shelton of Hendersonville, and great-granddaughter Cheyenne Shelton. Hazel Mae was also survived by Diane Hollon and several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever hold fond memories of their time spent together.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Hazel Mae Branes Shelton will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Shepherd Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends will gather to pay their final respects and bid farewell to a remarkable woman who touched the lives of those around her with love, creativity, and kindness.
