The Life Story of Maria van Asten

Maria van Asten was born on March 28th, 1937 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She grew up in a happy family with four brothers and two sisters. Her parents owned a grocery store in the heart of Amsterdam. During her childhood, Maria enjoyed sailing on a nearby lake, going to the beach, and having fun with her siblings and nieces and nephews.

However, during World War II, everything changed. In 1944, it was the hunger winter, and Maria’s family struggled to get by. After the war, Maria was educated to be a teacher at a girl’s school, where she taught the girls to knit and sew.

Maria loved to travel and often went on holidays to Italy and Greece. She started with a 125cc Vespa scooter and later moved on to a Citroen “two horsepower” car. Her most extended holiday was to Portugal, where she spent six weeks.

She had a life-changing trip to America to visit her brothers, where she met Bert, her future husband. They settled in Illinois, where Bert worked at Zenith. Sometimes they had to wake up an hour early in winter to clear the snow from their driveway.

Later, they moved to Etowah, North Carolina, after learning that it was a great place to live. Maria enjoyed working in the garden and volunteering at the WMCA. She made friends at the local restaurants and later at the gym, where she went almost every day.

Sadly, Maria passed away after a brief illness at the age of 87. Despite this, her memories live on with her friends and family.

Bless her.

Very sorry to hear of Maria passing. Though she kept to herself most of the time we admired her tenacity as she always remained independent even in her senior years. She once came to see me in my yard and asked that I check on her in 15 minutes while she cleaned her roof off😳. I offered to do it for her but she wouldn’t have it! 🩷 She was a very kind lady and I will miss seeing her walking around the neighborhood and working in her garden. She seemed to really love her beautiful gardens. My condolences to her family.🙏🏻
