Sherry Grigg Jones

December 31, 1944 - December 14, 2023

Sherry Grigg Jones, aged 78, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully on December 14, 2023, at Mission Hospital. Born on December 31, 1944, in Harrisburg, PA, she lived a life filled with love, compassion, and dedication to her work.

Witty and funny, Sherry never met a stranger. She always enjoyed spending time with her family and friends (and she was truly blessed over her years by many wonderful, caring and loving friends – thank you all for enriching her life and ours).

Sherry dedicated many years of service to Gaston County Social Services, where she made a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals and families. Her unwavering commitment to helping others reflected her kind and selfless nature.

She spent many years volunteering her time and talents with her church families of Maylo United Methodist Church (Ranlo/Gastonia, NC) and Etowah United Methodist Church (Etowah, NC). She loved her church families dearly and cherished the special bonds and friendships she made in choir, Sunday school, mission outreach, and worship. After her work retirement, Sherry continued to show her love of her community by volunteering with several organizations including the Council on Aging, Interfaith Assistance Ministries (IAM), Pardee Hospital and The Salvation Army.

She was a fun-loving, devoted and supportive mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. A dedicated den mother for Cub and Boy Scouts and a true and loyal band supporter during high school and continuing through Michael’s time at The Citadel. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Citadel with her husband, Dempsey, to watch the parades and football games so that she could feed Michael and his classmates some “real food” (which always included plenty of country ham biscuits).

Sherry also adored her grandchildren. She was always ready with an entertaining story to share and a willing accomplice for a good round of hide and seek or make believe. She also enjoyed listening to Ethan play his cello and watching him and Emory play tennis and basketball (which was always fun because it gave Nana a chance to relive her glory days by telling them stories about her own days of playing high school basketball). She was always ready for a Christmas vacation trip or a girls’ shopping expedition – especially if it involved finding a new local treasure shop, a good thrift store run or a sweet treat.

Sherry is preceded in death by her beloved father, Sam Grigg, her cherished mother, Virginia Ross, her devoted husband of 49 years, Dempsey Jones, and her dear brother, Sammy Grigg. While she may no longer be with us, her memory will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving son, Michael Jones, and his wife Cheryl, as well as her adored grandchildren, Ethan and Emory. Sherry also leaves behind her sister, Judy Grigg of Gastonia, NC, and many cherished friends who were touched by her warm spirit.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, January 20, beginning at 1:00 PM at Etowah United Methodist Church, where Pastor Richard Buff will officiate. In honor of Sherry’s memory, contributions can be made to Maylo UMC at 1900 Spenser Mountain Road, Gastonia, NC 28054 or to Etowah Methodist Church at P.O. Box 1268, Etowah, NC 28729. These donations will help support causes that were close to her heart.

Sherry Grigg Jones will forever be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and dedication to serving others. Her legacy will continue to inspire all those whose lives she touched.

Michael and family so sorry for your lost. I worked with Sherry at DSS for many years. Sherry was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. Sherry talked about her family with great love. Sherry will be missed by all that knew and loved her, but she will never be forgotten.

Michael and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many memories of her at Maylo. She loved her church and was always doing things to show her support and love for it. I also remember the support both your parents showed for you in anything you did. God bless you all during this difficult time.
