Gifts & Memorial Donations

Virginia Lind Dekker passed peacefully from this life on April 19, 2023, at TerraBella in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Virginia, the daughter of Frederick Everard Lind and Janie Hughes Mead Lind, was born in New Orleans on May 31, 1935. After graduating from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Virginia attended Newcomb College of Tulane, graduating in 1957 on the same day that her brother Dr. Frederick E. Lind, Jr. graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.

Before marrying John Henry Dekker in 1969, Virginia was a former Louisiana public school teacher in the greater New Orleans area.

Virginia, who was warm and gregarious and loved laughter, led an active social life and enjoyed travel and scuba diving. She was an ardent follower of the American political landscape. As an insight into her inherent kindness, one need look no further than Virginia’s passion for the welfare of animals, particularly dogs. She volunteered with the New Orleans SPCA and the Blue Ridge Humane Society in Hendersonville, NC. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and beloved husband.

Virginia was a lifelong Episcopalian, a congregant of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans and Saint John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock, NC.

Virginia was a member of the Orleans Club in New Orleans and the Hendersonville Country Club.

Virginia is survived and remembered lovingly by her nephews Frederick E. Lind, III and wife Sherrie, David D. Lind, JD, and niece Janie Elizabeth Lind Pogue and husband Allie; great-nephew Gregory Allie Pogue, great-nieces Elizabeth Lind Pogue, Alice Elizabeth Lind Malone, and Katherine Lee Lind; a great-nephew and a great-niece by marriage: Ryan Michael Pogue and Katherine Ann Pogue; great-great-nephew, Theodore Alexander “Teddy” Malone; great-great-nephew by marriage, Tillman Allie Pogue; a cousin Angus Miller Lind and wife Anne; step-children Jan Garrett Dekker and wife Ruby, Laurie Dekker Jobe and husband Bill, and Rose Mary Dekker; step-grandchildren Heather Prince Barrios, Katherine Bree Shaffstall, Kirstie Ann Kreeger, Thomas Edward Dekker, Sara Elizabeth Cusack, Travis James, Paul Bruno Cotoli; and multiple step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 1, 2023, at Saint John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, 1895 Greenville Highway, Flat Rock, NC, reception to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Virginia’s memory be directed to Blue Ridge Humane Society, at 1214 Greenville Highway Hendersonville, NC 28792.

My amazing grandmother, that is all that I can say. She and my grandfather were my world. They are what everyone should inspire to be in the walk of life. A huge part of me is who I am because of them. Now they are together again.
